Role of Christians in the World
We at Danville Presbyterian Church believe that the mission of Christians in the world is threefold; 1) evangelism, 2) deeds of mercy and 3) to fulfill the cultural mandate. The first mission of a Christian is to evangelize. This is made clear in Matthew 28:19 in which Christ says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,….“ The second mission of Christians is to do deeds of mercy. This mission flows directly from Jesus’ mandate in Mark 12:31 to, ”love your neighbor as yourself.” The third part of a Christian’s mission is the “Cultural Mandate”. This is the mandate that God gave to mankind at the creation. Humanity was created to manage God’s world. Christians are to be different than those around them, observing God’s moral absolutes, practicing love, standing up for righteousness and exposing evil. Christians are to involve themselves in all forms of lawful human activity, including political activity. By acting in accord with Christian values they will become salt (a preservative agent) and light (an illumination that shows the way) in the human community.
